The reader will quickly discover the extent to which social reflection within the Holy See serves to strengthen the work undertaken by the International Labour Organization. We can see its values mirrored in our own Constitution. Just as we are reminded that “from the justice of each comes peace for all,” and so we hear in the founding text of the International Labour Office that “the failure of any nation to adopt humane conditions of labour is an obstacle in the way of other nations which desire to improve the conditions in their own countries.” When reflecting on the challenge with which we are faced in ensuring “the development of each man and of the whole man,” we once again come across the International Labour Organization’s ever-present concern for promoting further social justice, as reaffirmed emphatically in the Philadelphia Declaration: “all human beings, irrespective of race, creed or sex, have the right to pursue both their material well-being and their spiritual development in conditions of freedom and dignity, of economic security and equal opportunity.” - J. Somavia (ILO past-Director general)
